Hope and Healing for 100 Children in Bamenda I Sub Division
On the 28th of March, 2026, 100 children from internally displaced and crisis-affected households in Abangoh and Ntagham, Bamenda I Subdivision, graduated from the Girl Shine and Boy Safe components of the ES304 project, implemented by IRC and SHUMAS with support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
From 1st February to 28th March, the children participated in 16 structured sessions on psychosocial support, emotional healing, communication, personal safety, healthy relationships, gender-based violence prevention, body awareness, and recreational activities. Through guided learning, games, and discussions, many children who once struggled with fear and silence began to open up, rebuild confidence, and connect with others. Their progress was reflected in a 60% improvement in post-test results compared to pre-test assessments.
The impact was deeply visible. Glory, 10, shared, “Before, I was always quiet and sad. Now I know I can speak, ask for help, and protect myself.” Junior, 14, added, “I learned that being strong is not fighting. It is knowing how to control yourself and respect others.” For caregivers, the change was just as meaningful. Madam Esther said, “My child smiles more now, talks freely, and behaves differently at home. This program truly helped.”
More than a graduation, the event was a celebration of restored childhood, renewed confidence, and brighter futures. Beyond the celebration, the program has laid a foundation for continued resilience, protection, and empowerment among children in these crisis-affected communities.
